esearchers, policymakers and other stakeholders must strengthen the energy sector's research and development ecosystem and safeguard Indonesia's energy security, a National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) official said on Wednesday.

Head of BRIN’s Energy and Manufacturing Research Organization (OREM) Haznan Abimanyu noted during the webinar "Green Energy and Carbon Emission Reduction" that to strengthen Indonesia’s energy resilience in the future, the agency encouraged the strengthening of research and innovation ecosystems, both in the oil-and-gas and new and renewable energy (NRE) sectors, as well as role adjustments in the energy transition.

Haznan said that Indonesia's energy demands, particularly for fuel and electricity, were projected to rise with population growth, lifestyle shifts and economic expansion.

The transition to green energy, however, must be done carefully in stages, said Haznan, because fossil fuels still play an important role in the energy transition.

“We need strategy and technology toward a sustainable energy transition,” he said.

Haznan added that achieving this required pentahelix collaboration, involving the government, researchers, communities, businesses and the media. He pointed to the successful biodiesel program as a result of pentahelix collaboration.

According to Haznan, the production of B30 biodiesel, which was introduced in 2019, has helped the country reduce diesel imports by an estimated 9 million kiloliters annually, equivalent to Rp 60 trillion (US$3.85 billion) in foreign exchange. In collaboration with various stakeholders, BRIN is currently developing B40 biodiesel.
