Hundreds of workers who lost their livelihoods when well-known shoe brand Bata closed its only factory in the country face an uncertain future but want to make the most of the compensation they expect to receive to build a future for themselves.
ell over 200 workers lost their livelihoods when well-known shoe brand Bata closed its factory in the West Java regency of Purwakarta recently. They now face significant challenges to feed their families but say they want to make the most of the compensation they will receive to build a future for themselves.
PT Sepatu Bata says a lack of demand forced it to shut the plant, its only one in the country and Indonesia’s oldest shoe factory.
Originally from the Czech Republic, the brand has become dear to many Indonesians who still remember wearing its dependable and affordable footwear during their school years.
"We made the best decision possible after conducting a thorough evaluation and engaging in negotiations with relevant parties. This decision will substantially boost efficiency in the company's operations. Our utmost priority is to facilitate a seamless transition for all employees and partners impacted by this change," Bata spokesman Hatta Tutuko said in a press release.
Nevertheless, several employees told The Jakarta Post they were unsure which type of new employment to pursue. Equipped with limited entrepreneurial experience and background, some are pondering starting businesses.
Dani Mardani had been employed by the shoemaker for 16 years, where he held the position of operator.
"[The layoffs] came out of the blue; we convened with the management team on Thursday of last week, and they simply instructed all employees to assemble in preparation for a major announcement," Dani recalled.
