T Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), a subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina, has started its geothermal exploration project in the Gunung Tiga area, Tanggamus Regency, Lampung.

The exploration project would allow the company to tap into 55 megawatts (MW) of geothermal energy reserve potential in the area.

“Gunung Tiga was chosen as one of the strategic locations for PGE's exploration project that started in 2024 due to its geothermal characteristics and promising potential,” the company management wrote in a statement released on Friday.

PGE exploration and development director Edwil Suzandi said in the same statement that the project would not only add to the company’s renewable energy capacity, but also “revive the ecosystem, empower the community and drive the economy in Lampung and Sumatra”.

Sapto Trianggo, project manager of the Ulubelu Extension 1 (Gunung Tiga) exploration project, explained in the same statement that the project would focus on three exploration wells that would be carried out in stages to ensure it met safety and environmental standards.

The company also vows to collaborate with local communities in areas adjacent to the project to ensure sustainable economic, social and environmental benefits, as well as prioritizing aspects of environmental protections and risk management in the project.
