ndonesia has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Qatari investment company to build 1 million affordable houses, as part of President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship program to improve homeownership in the country.

Public Housing and Settlements Minister Maruarar Sirait and Qilaa International Group chairman Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Thani inked the agreement on Wednesday at the presidential palace complex in Jakarta.

President Prabowo, State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir and Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani, as well as national housing task force head Hashim Djojohadikusumo, were present at the signing ceremony.

Maruarar said the agreement was the result of intergovernmental cooperation to accelerate the provision of houses for low-income families, adding that many other investors had expressed interest in funding the program.

“Our job now is to prepare state-owned land for the project,” the housing minister said in a statement issued by the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday.

“We hope that, in the shortest possible time, we can start with the first project to be implemented by Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Thani,” Hashim said in the same statement.
