T

he United States has backed out from its role as a co-leader in the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) for Indonesia and passed the mantle to Germany, according to the JETP Secretariat in Jakarta.

The move, which follows US President Donald Trump’s decision to exit the Paris Climate Accords, would place Germany alongside Japan in leading the International Partners Group (IPG) under the international effort to help finance Indonesia’s energy transition.

JETP Secretariat head Paul Butarbutar said Washington’s reduced role in the JETP would not affect energy transition funding for Indonesia, as the US would remain a participant in the program.

“Germany will do just as well as the US [as IPG co-lead]. It will not affect the commitment of the countries under the IPG,” he assured The Jakarta Post on Friday.

Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Yuliot told reporters in Jakarta on Friday that Indonesia remained committed to its pledges under the Paris Agreement but added that "we will follow developments, [for instance to decide] what needs to be adjusted in Indonesia."

The United Nations confirmed on Tuesday that it had received a formal notification on Monday about Washington’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accords, also known as the Paris Agreement.
