he European Union and France have promised 14.7 million euros (US$15.3 million) in grants for a five-year technical assistance program dubbed the Indonesia Energy Transition Facility (IETF).
The EU will contribute 10.6 million euros while the French government, through the French Development Agency (AFD), will provide the remaining 4.1 million euros.
The latter sum is to be used specifically to prepare projects slated to be supported by loans worth 500 million euros pledged by France under Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).
All funding is to be managed by the AFD for technical assistance that will benefit state-owned electricity utility PT PLN and the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.
French Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor-Leste and ASEAN, Fabienne Penone, said the grants would be used to support energy policies, including regulations in the energy sector and the related environmental, social, governance and gender aspects, as well as to prepare renewable energy projects including hydro and wind power plant projects.
“The IETF aligns with Indonesia’s ambitious energy transition objectives. So France is here to support the decisions taken by the Indonesian authorities,” he told reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Of the total funds, 6.5 million euros, on the other hand, will directly benefit PLN, according to PLN finance director Sinthya Roesly.
