ayapada Healthcare, part of local conglomerate Mayapada Group, has stated that its upcoming facility on Batam Island will offer much more competitive rates than hospitals in neighboring countries in the region and could attract foreign patients to seek treatment in Indonesia.

“We’re confident we can provide services at a lower cost than Jakarta, thanks to the advantages of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) [where the unit is located],” said Jonathan Tahir, chairman and Group CEO of Mayapada Healthcare, told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

“Our services will also be more affordable than Singapore, where healthcare costs are higher. However, we must ensure we remain cost-competitive with Malaysia.”

The government has estimated that over 1 million Indonesians travel abroad annually for medical treatment, costing the nation approximately US$11.5 billion in foreign reserves. These patients seek care not only in Asian countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Japan and South Korea but also in Europe and the United States.

To address this issue, the government has designated a 47.17-hectare SEZ in Batam. Of this, 23.1 ha in Sekupang district will be developed into an integrated health tourism center, while the remaining area in Nongsa district will focus on tourism.

The SEZ offers a range of incentives to attract investors, including reductions in import and income taxes.
