ransportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi has asked local airlines to consider purchasing the Boeing jets China has returned as part of its delivery standoff amid an escalating trade war with the United States.

Purchasing the undelivered Boeing jets intended for Chinese airlines was feasible in both regulatory and technical terms, Dudy said, emphasizing that airlines should only do so if the price and condition of the aircraft aligned with their current needs.

“We leave the final decision to the airlines. If an airline views the situation as an opportunity to acquire aircraft or to take advantage of, it might be good because we still need more aircraft," the minister said on Wednesday, as quoted by Bisnis.com.

Data from state-owned tourism holding company PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (InJourney) showed that only around 420 aircraft were operating domestic routes as of December 2024, or 57 percent of the total 740 aircraft operating domestically in 2019.

The shortfall in domestic aircraft indicates a significant decline in overall passenger capacity, which has in turn contributed to a spike in airfare over the last five years as demand far exceeded supply.
