GE HealthCare international president and CEO Elie Chaillot spoke to The Jakarta Post’s Ruth Dea Juwita two days later about the company’s further plans in Indonesia’s burgeoning medical equipment industry, including the challenges of local manufacturing and the opportunities of reducing outbound medical tourism.
Question: CT scanners are critical diagnostic tools to detect a broad range of conditions. What can you tell us about the devices, and when will the first locally made batch be ready?
Answer: This is the same high-end technology that we sell in Europe and other global markets. The equipment you will see in Indonesia is exactly the same as what is being used globally.
We are aiming to deliver the first batch by the end of this year or early next year. The number of units produced will depend on market demand. The government has indicated an initial need for 300 CT scanners, and we hope to supply all of them through GE. The agility we offer is key. If they require more, we have the flexibility to scale, whether that means producing two units a day, five or more. We can adapt as we have the capacity and the muscle.
