he government plans to overhaul 78,000 hectares of underperforming fish farms along Java’s northern coast, starting this year with a Rp 26 trillion (US$1.6 billion) investment backed by Danantara Indonesia.
The program will begin with 20.4 ha of shrimp ponds in the West Java regencies of Bekasi, Karawang, Subang and Indramayu, with the bulk of the funding coming from the state-run asset fund.
“The investment, entirely from Danantara, is in the form of cash,” Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said on Wednesday, as quoted by Tempo.

The project would be rolled out in phases, he added, with the aim to boost aquaculture yields and strengthen food security in Java’s densely populated coastal belt commonly known as Pantura.
The ministry expects it to generate up to 100,000 jobs over time, with at least 40,000 workers hired directly.
“This is not just about production. The first mission of the Pantura fish farm revitalization program is to restore the environment,” Trenggono said, referring to the degraded pond ecosystems in the region.
