T Medco Power Indonesia plans to export up to 600 megawatts of solar power to Singapore starting in 2028, once its Pulau Bulan solar photovoltaic (PV) project with a planned 2 gigawatt peak (GWp) in capacity is up and running.
The project, one of the largest cross-border energy export projects in the region, is to use a dedicated subsea link similar to the two existing gas pipelines that already connect Indonesia and Singapore.
“So this could become Indonesia’s first export of green energy. The benefits are substantial; it will create jobs, support future industries, generate foreign exchange and strengthen the green economy, all of which can drive Indonesia’s green growth going forward,” Medco Power president director Eka Satria said during a media briefing in Kota Baru Parahyangan, West Bandung, West Java, on Saturday.
Eka noted that Indonesia held an estimated 3,600 gigawatts of renewable energy potential, yet only 0.6 percent had been utilized to date.
He argued that the gap reflected the untapped business opportunities, both for domestic supplies and export markets, particularly as national electricity demand continued to climb at a projected rate of around 8 percent per year.
“From Indonesia’s potential, there is a lot we can supply. First, for PLN, around 17 GW. Second, Indonesia’s active market. And third, the regional demand for green power, especially in Singapore. Singapore currently has about 6 GW of electricity [generating] capacity, and it wants to convert half of that to green energy,” he said.
He added that the company was in talks with several prospective buyers.
