nlicensed gold mining operations are fueled by a financial network of colossal scale, with suspected funds circulating within the sector estimated at Rp 992 trillion (US$59.09 billion), according to the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK).

This figure exposes the vast economic and environmental cost of illegal mining, posing a significant challenge to law enforcement and state revenue collection.

PPATK head Ivan Yustiavandana said the illegal gold mining (PETI) network was extensive, with operations identified in Papua, Sulawesi and Java, as well as West Kalimantan and North Sumatra.

The agency's forensic analysis identified transactions worth Rp 185 trillion circulating through the illicit network from 2023 to 2025.

"The total nominal value of transactions suspected of being related to illegal gold mining during that period was more than Rp 185 trillion," Ivan said on Saturday, as reported by Kompas.com.

More than Rp 155 trillion of this sum was traced flowing into the accounts of companies allegedly owned by major players in the network.
