ndonesia enacted a third amendment to the Tourism Law last year, which the government and experts said can serve as a foundational shift toward a more flexible, inclusive and community-based approach.

Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana sat down with The Jakarta Post’s Ni Made Tasyarani and Chloe Djalal to explain why this approach has become a top priority under the current administration and how the ministry aims to meet its targets in the tourism industry, including tourist arrivals.

Question: What is President Prabowo Subianto's priority agenda for tourism?

Answer: The president has big priority [programs], but he understands that tourism is also important. That's why we recently increase the number of international airports to 37, from previously 17, because some of them were closed during the pandemic. We hope there will be more direct international routes.

President Prabowo always emphasized how one sector can impact people across social and economic status. Tourism Village, the program from this ministry, is very much aligned with his vision: a people-centered economy.

We have more than 6,200 villages all over Indonesia. With this program, we give them the communities in the villages training, promotional support and access to funding.
