he government is weighing a plan to require companies to contribute stipends for interns under its national internship program as it seeks to expand participation.

“We are currently studying how to involve companies more actively. One proposal is for companies to contribute a portion of the allowance, even if it is not the dominant share,” Manpower Minister Yassierli said on Friday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

The proposal follows an evaluation of existing training practices, which found that some companies had demonstrated a strong commitment to mentoring interns, he said.

The government now wants to formalize that commitment, including requiring companies to provide competency certificates at the end of the program.

Launched last year as part of an economic stimulus package to create jobs and support household spending, the national internship program has so far seen more than 16,000 participants complete its first phase, which ran from October 2025 to April 2026.
