BRIN awards outstanding research

It has officially been two years since a new chapter in Indonesia’s research and innovation journey unfolded.

Specifically, on April 28 marks the date embodying a strong basis for change via the Presidential Regulation Number 78 of 2021 as a derivative of the law UU (Undang-Undang) Number 11 of 2019, clause 48, which entrusted BRIN as an institution that carries out integrated research, development, study and application, as well as inventions and innovations.

“Even after two years, we realize change requires persistence, commitment and determination from all BRIN members without exception,” opens head of BRIN, Laksana Tri Handoko, who believes these are three pillars that produce great strengths in multi-entity unification.

Moreover, Handoko emphasized the second anniversary of BRINteraksi anticipated elevation in passion and spirit to improve the quality of research and collaboration with public as “BRIN does not only stand for researchers, but gives voice to all Indonesian people as well”.

This elicits the uniqueness of BRIN, as he aspires for the growth of the company to provide an inclusive research ecosystem the public can enjoy.

At BRIN, the research and HR research management, according to Handoko, had proven dedication and persistence in contributing to the utilization of science and technology in Indonesia.

“It is crucial for BRIN to give a token of gratitude for BRIN personnel who have accomplished their achievements,” continued Handoko.

Moreover, BRIN stands with open arms for all researchers in Indonesia whether that be academia or industry to strengthen the national research and innovation ecosystem as “BRIN belongs to all of us”, he emphasized, to ensure, on a local scale, “it is able to compete, as well as collaborate with global competitors and partners”.

While completing the remaining integration processes, Handoko picked up on how BRIN had fully embellished all ecosystems to strengthen programs, namely the provision of research and innovation infrastructure open to all parties.

These parties branch out to eight research-mobility schemes, which include continuing the recruitment of 500 young researchers with doctoral qualifications, nine research-funding schemes to support activities from upstream research to the development of research-based products in the industry and increasing collaboration and partnerships with various parties at home and across the regions.

Excitedly, Handoko also revealed: “The increase in researcher productivity is very real”, where another impactful achievement attained by BRIN successfully managed 58 licenses that have been obtained and technologically transferred to 350 partners. This proud moment also extends to around 560 new intellectual properties that have been registered, and numerous global indexed publications that have been published.

“We still have a long way to go,” added Handoko, “to truly become a lever and enabler of science and technologically based economic progress in Indonesia.”

The deputy for human resources of science and technology in BRIN, Edy Giri Rachman Putra, explained how the annual 2023 BRIN Researcher Award, the upcoming one being on May 7, is an award given to research with the highest output achievements.

The purpose behind the award is to encourage and motivate the BRIN research in pursuing its growth in continuously further increasing output-based productivity and spectacular research records in accumulation with last year’s output.

“The highest output achievement was calculated by accumulating output for a year in 2022,” said Edy.

In a series of BRIN anniversaries, it is, up-close and personal, awarding achievements: Minimum Work Results (HKM); Minimum Performance Output (KKM); and research track records, based on each research center.

According to Edy, BRIN feels the need to acknowledge the highest award on an ongoing basis to researchers within BRIN who should be appreciated for their good track record of research, as their achievements carry the ability to contribute in producing innovations that have positively impacted the progress of science and the technological field today.

The BRIN Researcher Award is given to 12 research organizations within BRIN, with researchers tacking subjects such as: aviation and space, nuclear power, energy and manufacturing, earth and maritime, biology and environment, electronics and informatics. Furthermore, the research focuses on articulating humane subjects that enliven: language and literature, humanities, social sciences, archeology, health, nanotechnology and materials, agriculture and food, governance, economy and social welfare.

In addition, BRIN will announce the 2023 Intellectual Property Award, which will be given to research that holds the highest accumulative royalty value for a year. It is in appreciation of the researchers within their ecosystems who have innovations utilized by the community and make continuous contributions to the development of science and technology.

“This aims to encourage research within the BRIN environment to ensure creation of new innovation that can be utilized by a wide range of audiences,” explained Edy.

BRIN’s second anniversary curates a moment that conveys information within the holding of  Indonesia’s largest research-and-innovation exhibition, namely, the Indonesia Research and Innovation Expo (InaRI Expo) 2023, anticipated to be held at the ICC Brin Building, Soekarno Science and Technology Area (Cibinong Science Center), in September.

Innovation for a Better Future is the very thematic paint of their special event that welcomes all members of the general public to join in this enlivening event, in celebration of acknowledging outstanding achievements that help our nation to progress.
