tate-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir demonstrated his consistent commitment to prioritizing the mental health of SOE employees across Indonesia through the ‘1,000 People Telling Their Stories’ road show. The road show’s most recent event took place on July 19, 2024, at the Cikole Jayagiri Resort in Bandung City, West Java. It was attended by 312 millennial employees and influencers from SOEs in West Java, who were invited to understand their emotions as part of the effort to raise awareness about mental health.

Erick Thohir, through SOEs Ministry Special Staffer III Arya Sinulingga, emphasized the importance of paying attention to mental health, especially in an era of rapid and pressure-ridden corporate and digital change.

"There are many changes in corporations; as digital technology advances, pressure increases. It is important for SOE employees to know how to release [their] emotions and express themselves, which could help them cope with pressure. The minister recognizes this and has initiated the first movement in corporations to not only discuss performance or finance, but also the mental and emotional well-being of SOE employees," Arya said.

The ‘1,000 People Telling Their Stories’ event was initiated as a mental health advocacy platform, providing a safe and comfortable space for SOE employees to share their personal stories. The West Java edition included several segments, starting with a meditation session led by mindfulness practitioner Putra Wiramuda and followed by a talk show featuring notable mental health advocates including psychologist Novy Yulianty, SOE owner Iwa Kustiyawan, actress Ariel Tatum and Miss Tourism Indonesia 2022 Adinda Cresheilla. There were also interactive talks with psychologist Aisya Yuhanida Noor, face-to-face consultations with psychologists and a five-sense experience to conclude.

The mental health-related occasion aligns with Erick Thohir's commitment to improving the quality of life for SOE employees, which is reflected in the recently launched Employee Wellbeing Policy (EWP) from the SOEs Ministry. The EWP provides guideline for SOEs to pay attention to other aspects of their employees' lives beyond work.

"The SOEs Ministry supports this initiative. We now facilitate the mental health needs of employees with quiet rooms for meditation and consultations within the ministry. We also have a hotline for SOE employees in need of mental health assistance. This initiative will positively impact the company's performance and encourage companies to treat employees as human beings rather than just numbers," Arya asserted.

The ‘1,000 People Telling Their Stories’ event in West Java is part of a series of road shows that have reached thousands of millennial SOE employees. This event marks the seventh location in the series thanks to the collaboration between the SOEs Ministry and the Menjadi Manusia platform, with support from Telkom Indonesia, Pertamina, KAI, Biofarma and Pos Indonesia.

The initiative is planned to continue reaching other cities and provinces to improve mental health literacy and related practices in Indonesia, so that the country’s people can live a healthier and more prosperous life.
