Indonesia Decides

Voters are more inclined to stay loyal to their preferred presidential candidates regardless of the political parties that nominate them, a new survey from the research and development department of Kompas daily has found.

The survey, which polled some 1,200 respondents across the country, was carried out between May 26 and June 4, amid ongoing political party maneuverings aimed at forming suitable alliances ahead of the 2024 general election.

It found that a majority of voters – some 67 percent of respondents – would still cast their ballots for the presidential candidate of their choice even if the candidate gets nominated by a political party that they disliked. This is an improvement from the 62.5 percent of respondents who would continue to back their preferred choice, as recorded in a Kompas survey conducted in January.

Keeping in line with other public opinion polls, the Kompas survey found that Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan make up the top three most electable presidential candidates.

They are followed by other popular names, including Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno, West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil and Democratic Party chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono.

But the survey also found differing levels of loyalty for each potential candidate, with Ganjar boasting the most loyal voter base, with 81 percent of respondents insisting they would still vote for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician regardless of the party that nominates him.
