City-owned developer PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) has recently announced that the construction of Jakarta’s first waste-to-energy incinerator in Sunter, North Jakarta, will commence by the end of the year, after almost four years of delays due to paperwork and funding issues.

According to Jakpro's vice president for corporate secretary Syachrial Syarif, the company is currently conducting a bidding process for the project called the intermediate treatment facility (ITF) Sunter, and is aiming to announce the winner in November.

"We have conducted the tender process in accordance with the prevailing regulations and good corporate governance [GCG] principles,” Syachrial said in a statement recently. “Jakpro subsidiary company PT Jakarta Solusi Lestari will announce the winner of the contract in November and the construction is set to commence in the fourth quartile of this year.”

The construction of ITF Sunter will cost an estimated Rp 5.2 trillion (US$340 million) and Jakpro is currently seeking Rp 517 billion from the Jakarta administration to help fund the project.

The waste-to-energy plant could turn up to 2,200 tonnes of waste into 35 megawatts of electricity per day, reducing waste volume by 80-90 percent in the process.
