Loss of faith in law enforcement single biggest contributor to slipping approval ratings

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Vice President Ma’ruf Amin’s administration has scored notably lower in public confidence polls at the end of its third year amid accusations of democratic backsliding and curtailed civil liberties.

Public approval of the administration has fallen over the past few months, along with trust in the government more generally, a recent survey by Litbang Kompas, the research arm of Kompas daily, has found.

The poll, published in a Kompas report on Monday, found that 62.1 percent of respondents approved of the leaders’ performance in office, down from 67.1 percent in June and 73.9 percent in January.

The survey interviewed 1,200 respondents in person nationwide from Sept. 24 to Oct. 7 and had a margin of error of 2.8 percent with a 95 percent confidence level.

The share of respondents who said they were dissatisfied with the government's performance increased to 37.9 percent in October from 32.9 percent in June.
