The toll road stretch is the main passage for people leaving Jakarta eastward to Central Java, Yogyakarta and East Java.
“If traffic congestion worsens, we will extend the one-way arrangement to Bawen,” Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Ahmad Luthfi said on Monday. The one-way system will be applied until Friday.
The nation is preparing for the biggest wave of mudik travelers since the start of the pandemic, as an expected 120 million people will travel to celebrate the end of Ramadan fasting month.
With Idul Fitri expected to fall on Saturday, a spike in the number of Indonesians on the move has been recorded, particularly on modes of public transportation.
Lutfhi said a total of 21,000 personnel from the police, Indonesian Military and government agencies had been deployed to safeguard the annual movement in Central Java.
Central Java authorities have set up 253 security and health posts around the province.
