Prabowo pulls ahead of Central Java governor in polling.
entral Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo’s electability rating is yet to rebound from the backlash over his and his party’s opposition to Israeli participation in the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which contributed to Indonesia’s removal as host nation for the global soccer event set for May.
A survey by Indikator Politik released on Wednesday found that two-time presidential hopeful Prabowo Subianto, the incumbent defense minister and Gerindra Party chairman, had outpaced Ganjar in popularity, leading by 4.8 percentage point in April.
Indikator Politik’s survey ran a three-horse race simulation and found that Prabowo’s electability rate had increased by 6 percentage points to 31.7 percent in April, from 26.7 percent in February. Meanwhile, Ganjar’s electability rate had decreased by 7.1 percentage points to 27.9 percent in April, from 35 percent in February.
Former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan trailed behind with a slight dip from 24 to 22.2 percent during the same period.
When polled among 19 potential candidates, Ganjar’s electability had also nosedived by 7.8 percentage points from 27.7 percent in March to 19.8 percent in April. Prabowo, on the other hand, saw his electability tick up slightly by 0.3 percentage points and Anies by 0.6 percentage points during the same period.
The nationwide telephone survey, which noted a 2.9 percent margin of error, involved around 1,212 respondents of voting age between April 8 and 13, after Indonesia had been stripped of its hosting rights to the U-20 World Cup.
A three-horse race simulation in an earlier survey by the Indonesia Survey Institute (LSI) conducted between March 31 and April 4, the day immediately after FIFA decided to remove Indonesia as host nation of the U-20 World Cup, also found Prabowo leading with 30.3 percent, well clear of Ganjar at 26.9 percent and Anies at 25.3 percent.
