Police are investigating the motive of the 60-year-old suspected shooter, Mustopa, who was allegedly visiting the office to seek an audience with the MUI leadership.
A shooting incident occurred just before noon on Tuesday at the Central Jakarta headquarters of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), authorities have confirmed.
Two MUI employees were injured during the incident, while the shooter died due to unknown causes at a nearby health facility.
Police are still investigating the motive of the suspected shooter, who has been identified as Mustopa, a resident of Lampung province.
According to a document shared with the press, the 60-year-old was visiting the office to seek an audience with the MUI leadership when he suddenly pulled out an air gun and fired several shots.
Mustopa was apparently knocked out when several security guards and office employees tackled him as he was attempting to flee.
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Karyoto told a press conference at the MUI office later on Tuesday that Mustopa was transported to the Menteng Police station before he was taken to a nearby Puskesmas (community health center), where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.
An autopsy is being performed on Mustopa’s body at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital in East Jakarta.
