resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has ordered the construction of a VVIP airport at the site of the country's planned new capital Nusantara in East Kalimantan.
In a presidential regulation (Perpres) issued recently, the President has given authority to the Public Works and Housing Ministry to carry out the project, and has ordered the Transportation Ministry to be in charge of the airport's operations.
"This VVIP airport is a special airport dedicated to government business at the IKN [Nusantara capital city]," the presidential regulation stipulates.
The new airport will be built on a location at Penajam Paser Utara, the site of the planned new capital.
The funding for the new airport will come from the state budget, and the land on which it will be built will be carved out from the government-controlled "land bank", the Perpres said.
The regulation was issued as President Jokowi traveled to Singapore to speak about investments in the development of Nusantara.
In his speech in Singapore, Jokowi said no matter who would win in next year’s general election, the IKN project would continue apace.
