The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is probing allegations of illegal levying and extortion by its own employees after its supervisory board found indications that dozens of employees have been pocketing up to Rp 4 billion (US$2,670,000).

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, KPK acting deputy for law enforcement Asep Guntur Rahayu said KPK investigators were currently deepening the probe into the matter.

“The allegations are that [some employees] working in KPK detention centers have committed corruption in the form of taking illegal levies. This is being investigated,” Asep said, as quoted by Kompas.id.

To this end, Asep said the investigation would start with the wardens. The KPK has a total of four detention facilities.

The KPK’s initial investigation has revealed that employees collecting illegal levies were found in Merah Putih detention center, located just behind the KPK headquarters in South Jakarta.

“We don't want to bring anyone to justice without sufficient evidence. So, in that regard, we are still investigating which [wardens] are responsible for which period,” he said.

The KPK, Asep went on to say, would not hesitate to take firm action against its own employees should they be found guilty of taking illegal levies, which can be counted as accepting gratuities.
