T

he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating an allegation of illicit financial flows from NasDem Party politician Syahrul Yasin Limpo to his party, after the antigraft body detained the former agriculture minister as a bribery suspect.

At a press briefing on Friday night, KPK deputy chair Alexander Marwata announced that the KPK had detained Syahrul and his subordinate Muhammad Hatta, the agricultural machinery and equipment director, after their questioning earlier that day.

In addition to the two officials, the KPK has also named the ministry’s secretary-general Kasdi Subagyono as suspects for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes totaling around Rp 13.9 billion ($885,000) from their colleagues at the ministry.

Kasdi was detained on Wednesday following the KPK’s announcement.

The commission arrested Syahrul on Thursday, a day before his scheduled interrogation, citing its concerns that the former minister was a flight risk or could destroy evidence.

The suspects allegedly used the illicit money to pay their credit card bills and installments for Syahrul’s private luxury car.
