he Home Ministry has extended the tenure of interim Jakarta governor Heru Budi Hartono for another year, giving him another crack at tackling perennially worsening air pollution and leading a transitional period for the 496-year-old metropolis that is about to lose its status as Indonesia’s capital.
Heru was handed a presidential decree that extends his term for another 12 months in a ceremony at the Home Ministry on Monday. Home Minister Tito Karnavian was present during the event.
Heru said that his focus would be on tackling the capital’s congested streets and air pollution.
“We will continue the work we haven’t finished [throughout the past year], including [tackling] traffic [congestion], pollution and trash,” he said, as quoted from a statement from the Jakarta administration.
Heru will stay in his post so long as he passes a routine quarterly assessment held by the Home Ministry. In his most recent evaluation in late September, Heru was grilled on a number of issues, including pollution, poverty and inflation.
Heru’s time as interim leader has drawn mixed responses from members of the Jakarta City Council.
