President Jokowi bestowed national hero titles on six figures, recognizing their pivotal role in Indonesia’s independence struggle on National Heroes Day.
o commemorate 2023 National Heroes Day, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo declared six people from six provinces as national heroes at the State Place on Friday.
The titles are a form of appreciation and respect for the services of those who struggled for Indonesian independence. The figures’ heirs attended the ceremony as representatives of the honorees.
Jokowi awarded the national hero titles to Ida Dewa Agung Jambe from Bali, Bataha Santiago from North Sulawesi, Mohammad Tabrani from East Java, Ratu Kalinyamat from Central Java, Abdul Chalim from West Java and Ahmad Hanafiah from Lampung.
The awards were based on Presidential Decree No. 15/2023 on the awarding of national hero status, issued in Jakarta on Monday.
“[The award] is great appreciation and respect [to the figures’] extraordinary services, who carried out armed struggle, or political struggle, or struggled in other fields during their lifetimes to achieve, seize, defend and fulfill [Indonesian] independence, as well as realizing national unity and integrity,” the decree stipulates.
Also attending the ceremony were Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo, State-Owned Enterprise Minister Erick Thohir, Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Investment Minister/head of the Investment Coordinating Board Bahlil Lahadalia, Indonesian Military chief Adm. Yudo Margono and National Police chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
Earlier in the day, President Jokowi attended and led a commemoration service at Kalibata National Heroes’ Cemetery in South Jakarta, where he and a number of other officials paid tribute to fallen heroes.
