Presidential candidate Anies Baswedan has appointed former National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) head Muhammad Syaugi to manage his 2024 presidential campaign.
Anies unveiled a number of personnel from his campaign team on Tuesday, shortly before he and running mate Muhaimin Iskandar went to the General Elections Commission (KPU) headquarters to draw a unique ballot number for the presidential election.
“Syaugi has a long list of leadership [credentials] and understands how to manage quite a large organization. That’s why the choice was Syaugi,” Anies told the press at his campaign headquarters in Jakarta.
Anies added that Syaugi had strong managerial skills and an extensive professional network, which he said would contribute greatly to the success of the campaign.
Syaugi spent most of his career in the Air Force before serving in the Defense Ministry as defense planning director general from 2014 to 2017. He then led Basarnas from 2017 to 2019.
During his time at Basarnas, he led the search operation for the victims of the Lion Air JT-610 plane crash in the waters off Tanjung Karawang, West Java.
Syaugi retired from military service, and Basarnas, in late 2018 with the rank of air marshal.
