Former KPK chairman Agus Rahardjo claims amendments to the KPK Law are closely tied to his decision to defy President Joko Widodo's purported request regarding the e-KTP corruption case.
ormer Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Agus Rahardjo claims President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo asked him to halt the Rp 2.3 trillion (US$147.9 million) e-KTP corruption case investigation against former House of Representatives speaker Setya Novanto.
During an interview with news presenter Rosiana Silalahi aired on Kompas TV on Thursday, Agus said that he believed the amendments to the KPK Law were closely tied to this fact. In the interview, Agus recalled being summoned alone by Jokowi during the e-KTP case.
"I think this is the first time I have disclosed this in the media, watched by many people. Truthfully, during the e-KTP case, I was summoned alone by the President,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com.
Agus said that he was taken aback by the President’s secrecy.
He said the President usually summoned all five KPK leaders at once, but Agus said he was summoned alone and was asked to enter the Palace through the mosque route instead of the press room.
Accompanied by State Secretary Pratikno, Jokowi then purportedly asked Agus to stop the investigation into Setya.
However, Agus rejected Jokowi’s request because the sprindik (letter ordering the start of an investigation) for Setya had been issued three weeks earlier, and the SP3 (investigation termination procedure) did not exist at the time.
