Future debates for the 2024 presidential election will allow moderators to elaborate on unclear questions from candidates, continue the use of podiums for candidates and introduce fixed microphones on each podium.

Indonesia Decides

The General Elections Commission (KPU) will make some technical adjustments for future election debates, including expanding moderators’ responsibilities, in response to complaints from several campaign teams after last week’s event.

The debate on Dec. 22 was the first involving vice presidential candidates, Anies Baswedan’s running mate Muhaimin Iskandar, Prabowo Subianto’s mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka and Ganjar Pranowo’s partner Mahfud MD.

While considered “tamer” by observers compared with the heated presidential candidate debate on Dec. 12, the vice presidential debate was not short of highlights, some of which incited complaints from the candidates’ camps who claimed they were put at a disadvantage.

Among the complaints was one from the Anies-Muhaimin camp, which claimed the vice presidential candidate was put into a corner by a question from Gibran. The Surakarta mayor asked Muhaimin about his plan to improve Indonesia’s rank in the SGIE if he was elected to office.

The acronym stands for the State of the Global Islamic Economy, an annual index of the global Islamic economy issued by the United States-based DinarStandard.

Muhaimin ended up wasting his two-minute response time to ask Gibran about the acronym, which Prabowo’s running mate used to lecture the National Awakening Party (PKB) chairman about the term.
