The Anies-Muhaimin and Ganjar-Mahfud campaigns are running neck and neck in a battle for a spot in a possible runoff as they seek to woo undecided voters with a people-oriented strategy.
As Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo remain neck and neck in recent public opinion polls, they are staying focused on delivering their own flagship programs in a bid to ensure that February’s presidential election goes to a runoff.
The latest surveys from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Indikator Politik Indonesia show that Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka command a vast lead over rivals Anies-Muhaimin Iskandar and Ganjar–Mahfud MD, who are locked in a tight race for the second spot.
But with Prabowo polling below the 50 percent necessary to claim an outright victory in the three-horse race on Feb. 14, analysts say it is still too early to conclude an easy victory for the defense minister.
Vice presidential candidate Muhaimin, who ranked second in the CSIS survey and third in the Indikator Politik survey alongside the former Jakarta governor, said on Thursday while on the campaign trail in East Java that surveys “are whips to evaluate and motivate us to work harder”, as quoted by Kompas.com.
The CSIS survey, published on Dec. 27 after the first presidential debate, found that 43.7 percent of the respondents favored Prabowo-Gibran, ahead of Anies-Muhaimin with 26.1 percent and Ganjar-Mahfud with 19.4 percent.
Indikator Politik’s survey, published on Dec. 26 after the first vice presidential debate, found that Prabowo-Gibran was leading with 46.7 percent, but with Ganjar-Mahfud in second with 24.5 percent and Anies-Muhaimin following closely with 21 percent.
