Vice presidential candidate Muhaimin Iskandar said it was the government's responsibility to provide a decent income and affordable basic goods for the population.
Vice presidential candidate Muhaimin Iskandar said ensuring that people had a source of income and could buy basic goods at low prices was one of the government’s responsibilities.
"The government has a responsibility, in simple terms, to fill the people's wallets, make goods cheap and provide savings," said Muhaimin, during a campaign event in Metro, Lampung, on Monday, as quoted by Antara.
He was responding to a question from a driver of a ride-hailing application who complained about the lack of income due to unfair regulations in the transportation industry and government negligence.
The National Awakening Party (PKB) chairman agreed that until now, no regulation had favored workers in the transportation sector.
"This is what we call neglect. If [Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar] wins, we will not let this happen. For years, these drivers have been ignored – though they are resilient despite the legal uncertainty," he said.
Muhaimin said the candidate pair would address this issue by improving work opportunities by creating as many job vacancies as possible through new industry openings.
"For example, in agriculture, we have a concept called the agro-maritime revolution. We will fix everything from upstream to downstream, from land ownership to production, sales and logistics," he said.
The reform of the transportation sector, according to Muhaimin, included better regulations in the transportation sector so that the drivers of ride-hailing application companies could earn a better income.
