abor rights NGO Migrant Care says it is inspecting overseas voter rolls following complaints from Indonesians residing in New York, the United States, that the list of eligible voters there, managed by the General Elections Commission (KPU), featured numerous duplicate names.
On the list of over 11,000 Indonesians eligible to vote in New York, the group said it found many names that were registered two or three times, allowing these people to submit multiple votes for the 2024 general election at polling stations, mobile ballot boxes or by mail.
The “problematic” list, Migrant Care said, could potentially be misused to distort overseas election results.
“We have found many duplicate names, and these aren’t common names either,” Migrant Care executive director Wahyu Susilo said in a video statement in which he was shown scrolling through the voter roll in New York with dozens of repeated entries highlighted.
“This list, prepared by the KPU, has given us the message that there are still many errors in our overseas voter rolls, which is fatal since every vote matters,” Wahyu added.
Wahyu told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday that the group was analyzing the data and was planning to lodge a formal complaint with the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) sometime on Thursday or Friday.
“Bawaslu has yet to receive the complaint. But since we have already received the initial information, we are also currently analyzing the data,” Bawaslu commissioner Lolly Suhenty told the Post later on Tuesday.
