The Four Fingers Salute movement calling on supporters of Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo to unite so the presidential race goes to a second round has gained traction on social media and may pave the way for a possible alliance between the two camps in the runoff.
Recent surveys show that Anies and Ganjar are locked in a tight race to secure the second spot in a likely runoff against frontrunner Prabowo Subianto, who so far does not appear to have the majority necessary to preclude a June runoff vote despite his commanding lead in opinion polls.
Speculation has been rife that Anies and Ganjar might look to forge an alliance in the case of a runoff vote, particularly with their supporters seemingly united on social media through the Four Fingers movement, which also calls for a fair election and is against abstentionism.
Ganjar campaigner Yenny Wahid said on Monday it was a sign of prospective future collaboration between the Ganjar and Anies camps, tempo.co reported.
Yenny said there were similarities between the two groups of supporters, including “the desire for democratic principles to truly be upheld in the upcoming presidential election”.
She said that while Ganjar’s camp was still focused on gaining as much ground in the presidential race ahead of this month’s election, it was also open to communicating with all other camps.
