T

he Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) is investigating allegations of duplicate names on the list of eligible overseas voters in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

“We are handling the case [...],” Bawaslu commissioner Lolly Suhenty said on Thursday, as quoted by state-owned news agency Antara.

“We hope the public will be patient in waiting” until the conclusion of the investigation, she said, adding that the agency would publicly announce the results.

The agency began its probe into the alleged duplication in the Johor Bahru voters list at around the same time as Migrant Care filed its complaint against the Johor Bahru overseas voter registry (DPTLN) with the Bawaslu on Thursday.

The Jakarta-based labor rights NGO claims it has found over 3,200 duplicate names on the list of over 119,000 registered overseas voters in Johor Bahru, with many of the duplicate names carrying the same address and age.

“Our findings were based on our examination into the Johor Bahru voters list,” Migrant Care executive director Wahyu Susilo told reporters after filing the complaint on Thursday.
