Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has encouraged people to use public transportation during the mudik season to prevent traffic accidents, expressing his commitment to providing optimum service to the public during this year’s Idul Fitri.
ransportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has urged prospective travelers to use public transportation rather than private vehicles for their Idul Fitri mudik (exodus) journeys to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
"I don’t recommend using private cars and especially motorcycles, because 70 percent of [traffic] accidents involve motorcycles, and we provide free mudik facilities," Budi said in Jakarta on Wednesday, as quoted by the Antara news agency.
According to Budi, the large-scale mobility during the peak holiday season — which his ministry previously estimated will involve 193.6 million people — must be accommodated with adequate facilities and infrastructure in every sector.
He said that his ministry and relevant stakeholders remained committed to providing optimal service to the public so their exodus journey can be safe, comfortable and memorable.
The ministry has prepared a mobility management policy for this year’s Idul Fitri for all modes of transportation, including operational restrictions on freight vehicles.
Furthermore, the ministry also conducted other anticipative measures, such as preparing backup transportation facilities for all transportation modes, conducting ramp checks, traffic engineering and coordinating with other institutions such as the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and other ministries.
The Transportation Ministry opened the 2024 Integrated Idul Fitri Transportation Center Post on April 3 to monitor transport mobilization and coordinate with stakeholders until April 18.
