Abu Bakar Kogoya, a known KKB leader, and one other alleged KKB member were shot dead in a shootout on Thursday in Tembagapura, Central Papua, on Thursday.
uthorities report that Abu Bakar Kogoya, a known leader of an armed criminal group (KKB), was killed in Tembagapura district, Mimika regency, Central Papua, during an engagement with a joint security forces patrol on Thursday.
Operation Cartenz Peace commander Sr. Comr. Faizal Ramadhani said that Kogoya, also known as Abu Bakar Tabuni, was part of the KKB network in the Mimika regency involved in several attacks in Tembagapura district and Intan Jaya regency.
"First, on Oct. 21, 2017, Abu Bakar Kogoya was involved in a gun attack on Brimob [National Police’s Mobile Brigade] officers Second Agent Almin and Brig. Mufadol at Mile 69 of Tembagapura district, Mimika regency," he said in a written statement on Friday, as quoted by CNN Indonesia.
Faizal said the victims of the attack had suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and leg.
Abu Bakar Kogoya's second attack took place on Nov. 14, 2017, during which Kogoya reportedly fired at a car, injuring a passenger.
Third Joint Regional Defense Command (Kogabwilhan III) chief Lt. Gen. Richard TH Tampubolon said the shootout that resulted in Kogoya’s death was triggered following reports of gunfire in the Mile 69 area of Kali Kuluk, Tembagapura, prompting locals to flee the location.
"Responding to the situation, a joint security forces patrol consisting of the Nanggala task force and the Indonesian Military’s Habema operations command of Operation Cartenz Peace swiftly deployed to the scene and immediately opened fire," Richard said in a written statement on Thursday.
