Some 193.6 million Indonesians, nearly three quarters of the country’s population, are expected to participate in the annual Idul Fitri tradition of mudik this year, up 56 percent from the number of travelers last year.
While Idul Fitri will fall on either April 9 or 10, depending on the sighting of the moon, the government has announced a four-day official holiday period, making for 10 days of government-sanctioned time off, from Saturday until April 15.
Authorities were to begin enacting traffic policies along the country’s toll roads on Friday, according to National Police traffic corps chief Insp. Gen. Aan Suhanan.
“To control the traffic along the toll roads, we’ll implement traffic restrictions and management policies during the mudik season,” he said during a meeting with lawmakers on Tuesday.
The policies included one-way, counterflow and odd-even policies, effective from 2 p.m. on Friday to midnight on Sunday, he continued.
