Many Jakarta residents have been shocked to find their names were used without their consent to support candidate pair Dharma Pongrekun and Kun Wardana, who are running as independents in the upcoming gubernatorial race.
Prevailing regulations require would-be independent candidates in Jakarta to collect more than 600,000 signatures, 7.5 percent of the city’s 8.2 million registered voters, and submit the letters of support along with copies of ID cards of the supporters to the General Elections Commission (KPU) Jakarta office.
Ahmad Faiz, a registered voter in Pulo Gadung, East Jakarta, said he realized his identity had been misused after checking the list of supporters of Dharma-Kun on the KPU website, following reports on X about alleged identity theft in the KPU assessment of the eligibility of independent candidates.
"I don’t recall giving a copy of my ID card to support anyone, let alone Dharma Pongrekun. I don't even know Dharma or his running mate," Faiz said on Friday, as quoted from kompas.com.
Faiz said he also found the identities of his parents had been used without their knowledge.
Another East Jakarta resident named Umen also found that his name was in the list of people supporting Dharma-Kun even though he never gave his signature for the pair.
Just like Faiz, Umen only checked his name on the KPU website after the alleged identity theft went viral on social media.
