ormer Constitutional Court chief justice Anwar Usman has filed an appeal against a Jakarta State Administrative Court (PTUN) ruling on his dismissal from the court’s top seat.
The PTUN ruled in August partially in favor of a petition Anwar filed over his demotion from the chief justice position. A panel of judges with the administrative court declared that Suhartoyo’s appointment as the new chief justice was invalid and restored Anwar’s “reputation” as a justice.
The bench, however, did not grant the last point of Anwar’s petition: overturning his dismissal as the court’s chief justice. This decision stymied his hope of being automatically restored to the court’s top position.
According to the administrative court case tracking system, Anwar submitted his appeal on Tuesday.
In November of last year, Anwar, who is the brother-in-law of outgoing President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, was removed from his position as chief justice following a ruling by the court’s ethics council.
The council found him guilty of failing to recuse himself from a petition seeking to revise the age requirements for presidential and vice presidential candidates under certain circumstances.
The justices’ ruling in favor of the petition cleared the way for Jokowi’s eldest son and Anwar’s nephew Gibran Rakabuming Raka to run in February’s election as the vice presidential candidate of Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto. The pair subsequently won the election.
