he House of Representatives is set to pass on Thursday amendments to two laws that will allow president-elect Prabowo Subianto to form a bigger cabinet and appoint more members to a presidential advisory board once he takes office.
House Legislation Body (Baleg) chair Wihadi Wiyanto, a member of Prabowo’s Gerindra Party, said the House leadership had convened to discuss the inclusion of two bills in the scheduled plenary meeting on Thursday.
“The results of the last meeting were clear that [the bills] would be brought to the nearest plenary session. If we look at the [schedule of] plenary sessions, the nearest one will be this week,” Wihadi said on Tuesday.
Last week, all nine political party factions in the Baleg, the majority of which are aligned with Prabowo, agreed to remove a legal limit of 34 on the number of ministries in a proposed revision to the 2008 Ministry Law. The bill will allow the number of ministries to instead be “determined by a sitting president in accordance with the needs of their administration”.
Prabowo’s Gerindra Party has signaled that its chairman may install politically aligned professionals in his cabinet in an effort to ensure an effective government.

While the names are still unclear, it is certain that Prabowo’s cabinet will be bigger than his predecessor’s. The number of ministries may increase to more than 40 to accommodate several political allies and ensure that his incoming government can realize his programs.
