In the case of sole candidate failing to win more than 50 percent of votes, the election will be repeated in 2025, with stages kick off after the Constitutional Court finishes hearing all disputes on the regional election results.
More than 30 regions will still see uncontested races in November despite the General Elections Commission (KPU) reopening the candidate registration window to encourage more contenders to run in the elections.
The initial registration period, from Aug. 27 to 29, resulted in 43 regions seeing only a single candidate pair registering their candidacies. The regions included West Papua, as well as Surabaya in East Java and the East Kalimantan capital of Samarinda.
The poll body later reopened the registration twice, from Sept. 2 to 4 and from Sept. 11 to 16, as part of its efforts to provide another chance for political parties to reconfigure their alliances and field alternative candidate pairs.
Despite the extended registration, “one province and 34 regencies and cities” failed to see new candidate pairs come forward to contest the elections, as announced by KPU commissioner Idham Holik
The local KPU offices in six regencies were checking each candidate pair’s documents and performing medical checkups on them.
“We’re still waiting for the results of these processes from the six regencies,” Idham said.
