Having died at the estimated age of 23, Si Manis was one of the oldest tigers at the zoo.
female Sumatran tiger named Si Manis has died at Medan Zoo in North Sumatra, adding to the list of tigers deaths at the facility, which has struggled with funding issues and mismanagement.
Having died at the estimated age of 23, Si Manis was one of the oldest tigers at the zoo. Sumatran tigers have a life expectancy of about 12 years in the wild and about 20 years in captivity.
Ahmad Arfan, a staff member at the zoo, said that Si Manis had been in poor health since May 2024. Intensive medical care had helped prolong her life until she was found dead in her enclosure on Friday afternoon.
An autopsy on Si Manis found that her death was the result of problems with her liver, heart and kidneys. It also found significant fat buildup around her heart and other organs, according to zoo veterinarians.
The zoo currently has seven tigers in its care, two of which are critically ill. One of the sick animals, a male Sumatran tiger named Anggi, was brought to the zoo alongside Si Manis in 2005. Anggi is estimated to be around 20 years old.
Zoo staff member Arfan said he was concerned that their conditions might deteriorate further as they were experiencing serious, potentially untreatable illnesses.
"I am worried that after Si Manis' death, there will be another Sumatran tiger that dies at Medan Zoo," he told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
