n his first political address after being sworn in as Indonesia’s eighth president on Sunday, President Prabowo Subianto called on private citizens and political leaders to have the courage to confront all the country’s challenges, whether from within or without.
Prabowo said the country was facing various hindrances amid global and regional dynamics and that, therefore, everyone, from academics and religious and political leaders to businesspeople and young people, should stand firm in facing those threats.
However, the President continued, the Indonesian people should also acknowledge that some of the country’s challenges came from within, as the nation was not being sufficiently careful in managing its own wealth.
“We have to be introspective and look at our own faces. We must dare to improve ourselves, correct ourselves,” Prabowo said in his speech after being inaugurated at the Senayan legislative complex in Jakarta.
The former Army general then called on the country’s political leaders not to be content with the progress made in the past years but to look further.
“We’re glad that we’re accepted in the G20. We’re proud of being called the world’s 16th largest economy. But do we really understand the full picture of ourselves?” Prabowo said.
