Indonesia Decides

Former president Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said several candidates running in the upcoming regional elections asked for his support shortly after he returned to his hometown in Surakarta, Central Java on Sunday.

Some candidates running for governor or mayor either in Central Java or neighboring East Java reached out to him in his home in Surakarta on Sunday night – only a few hours after he ended his two-term, decade-long presidency with a high approval rating.

Among those visiting Jokowi were Central Java gubernatorial candidate Ahmad Luthfi and his running mate Taj Yasin, as well as Surakarta mayoral candidate Respati Ardi and Karanganyar regent candidate Ilyas Akbar Almadani.

East Java deputy governor candidate Emil Dardak also paid a visit to the former president that day. Emil is the running mate of former governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa, who was a social affairs minister in Jokowi’s cabinet between 2014 and 2018.

All of the visiting candidates are running on the ticket of political parties in the Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM) supporting the administration of newly sworn-in President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi’s eldest son. Many KIM parties once supported Jokowi’s past administration.

"They all asked me to campaign [for them], but I told them I want to get some sleep instead," Jokowi said in Surakarta as reported by Kompas.
