T

wo serious accidents involving heavy goods vehicles in the city of Tangerang, Banten, and on the Pemalang-Batang Toll Road in Central Java on Thursday, have raised concerns over the lack of competent drivers in the country and the poor working conditions of truckers.

At least six people, consisting of four motorcyclists, a car driver and a pedestrian, were injured after a freight truck hit more than a dozen vehicles in Tangerang on Thursday afternoon.

Tangerang Police chief Sr. Comr. Zain Dwi Nugroho explained that the incident started when the 24-year-old truck driver, identified only as JFN, hit the bumper of a car stopped at a red light near Jl. KH. Hasyim Ashari.

“The driver tried to flee the scene and drove his truck recklessly as he tried to get away from locals who were chasing after him,” Zain said in a statement on Friday.

He added that JFN hit nine more cars and six motorcycles before motorists managed to stop him at the Adipura monument traffic circle on Jl. Veteran, about 11 kilometers from the original crash site.

"The driver was beaten by the mob and is currently in intensive care at Tangerang Regional Hospital," Zain added.
