resident Prabowo Subianto has agreed to improve teachers’ welfare by doubling the basic salary of those with civil servant status (ASN), and provide an additional Rp 2 million (US$125) for each non-ASN teacher.
The plan was confirmed by Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti after a meeting with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday.
"[The President] will announce the improvement in teacher’s welfare [personally],” Abdul was quoted by Antara as saying, without specifying when the policy would take effect.
He has requested the President to announce the policy during the main event of this year’s National Teacher’s Day at the Jakarta International Velodrome in Rawamangun, East Jakarta, on Thursday, which will host teacher representatives from across the country.
Previously, House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani urged the government to take concrete actions to improve the welfare of teachers, including advocating for salary increases particularly for teachers in remote areas.
"Teachers’ welfare must be a priority, as they are the main pillars of education. We cannot separate welfare from the quality of teaching," Puan said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
