The Jakarta provincial administration is reviewing the proposal to limit the rental period for low-cost apartments (rusunawa).
Acting Jakarta governor Teguh Setyabudi said the administration was carefully assessing the situation to find the best solution.
"We will discuss what the best policy and solution will be later," Teguh said on Monday, as quoted by kompas.com.
The proposal to limit the rental period is being drafted as part of a revision of Gubernatorial Regulation No. 111/2014.
Under the proposed rule, government program beneficiaries will be allowed to rent for up to 10 years, with four renewal periods of two years each.
General tenants would be limited to six years, with two renewal periods of two years each.
One of the reasons for the rental period restriction is the high amount of rent arrears. The total outstanding rent amounts to Rp 95.5 billion (US$5.8 million) from 17,031 rusunawa units across Jakarta.
