tate-owned enterprises (SOEs) are offering free mudik (exodus) trips for 100,000 travelers using buses, trains and ships while also providing toll fare discounts for the upcoming Idul Fitri holiday. Infrastructure preparations are also underway to accommodate a surge in travel.

This year, the Transportation Ministry predicts that half of Indonesia’s population, or around 146 million people, will travel during the holiday, with West Java recording the highest mobility, according to a release earlier this week.

To accommodate the high mobility, SOEs Minister Erick Thohir planned to make complete preparations with SOEs for all regions across the country that "aims to facilitate public travel."

A total of 78 SOEs are participating in the free mudik program, the ministry announced during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday. Transportation SOEs are providing 67,000 bus seats for routes to major cities across Java, including Bandung in West Java, Semarang in Central Java and Surabaya in East Java.

Meanwhile, railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is offering 28,000 free train tickets for trips from Jakarta to Semarang. For sea transportation, which will accommodate 5,000 passengers, ferry operator ASDP is providing routes from Jakarta to Lampung, as well as services at its Sulawesi ports. Additionally, the national shipping company PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Pelni) is operating routes from Central Kalimantan to Central Java.
