Train-minivan collision in Central Java kills four 'mudik' travelers

Seven members of two families were traveling on 'mudik' (exodus) for Idul Fitri when the Batara Kresna railbus collided with their vehicle on Wednesday morning at a railroad crossing in Sukoharjo, Central Java, killing four and injuring three.

our people were killed on Wednesday morning when the Batara Kresna train, operated by state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), collided with a minivan at a railroad crossing in Gayam village, Sukoharjo regency, Central Java.

The incident occurred at around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday as the Batara Kresna train was traveling north from Wonogiri to Surakarta. Witnesses at the scene said the crossing keeper had not closed the gate in time.

The resulting crash occurred as the minivan was crossing in a westerly direction, and the vehicle was demolished as it was dragged around 20 meters down the tracks.

Traffic director Sr. Comr. Sonny Irawan of the Central Java Police said the vehicle was carrying seven members of two families who were traveling from Jakarta to Sukoharjo and Wonogiri on mudik (exodus) for Idul Fitri.

"The crash claimed the lives of four passengers, while the remaining three were hospitalized with injuries," Sonny said on Wednesday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

In the wake of the tragic incident, the Sukoharjo Police arrested the crossing keeper and are questioning seven witnesses, including residents who saw the crash unfold.

The crossing keeper could face charges under Article 23 of the 2007 Railway Law and Article 359 of the Criminal Code for negligence resulting in death, punishable by a maximum five years in prison.
